Serpentine Pavilion 2014 designed by Smiljan Radić

Radić is the fourteenth architect to accept the invitation by the Serpentine to design a temporary Pavilion outside the entrance to the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens. His design follows Sou Fujimoto’s cloud-like structure which was visited by almost 200,000 people in 2013 and was one of the most visited Pavilions to-date.

Occupying a footprint of some 514 square metres on the lawn of the Serpentine Gallery, plans depict a semi-translucent, cylindrical structure, designed to resemble a shell, which rests on large quarry stones. This work has its roots in the architect’s earlier work, particularly The Castle of the Selfish Giant, inspired by the Oscar Wilde story and the Restaurant Mestizo - part of which is supported by large boulders

The MoMA announces the first ever retrospective devoted to Björk

Following the footsteps of the V&A in London, which hold a retrospective of David Bowie's work last year,  the MoMA in New York has announced that it will present a retrospective devoted to Björk in March 2015. The museum recently acquired the Biophilia app for its permanent collection.

“Björk is an extraordinarily innovative artist whose contributions to contemporary music, video, film, fashion, and art have had a major impact on her generation worldwide,” said Klaus Biesenbach, MoMA's chief curator at large. “This highly experimental exhibition offers visitors a direct experience of her hugely collaborative body of work.”

The exhibition promises to span 20 years of Björk's work, including everything from her groundbreaking visuals, music videos and films to her instruments and costumes (from Alexander McQueen's costume for Homogenic to Stefano Pilati for Biophilia).

Björk will co-write the retrospective with acclaimed Icelandic writer and ex-Sugarcubes member Sjón Sigurdsson, and the whole experience will culminate in a specially commissioned immersive film and music exhibit by 3D design company Autodesk and Andrew Huang, who conceived the mind-melting video for "Mutual Core".

Björk is one of the few musicians to land their own MoMA retrospective – Kraftwerk were recently the subject of a retrospective of that scale. Björk at MoMA will open 7 March and run until 7 June 2015.

Matias Faldbakken

It's often the negative, or seemingly hostile act that underpins the artist's practice where the creative and destructive gesture are one and the same. Like many of his 'container' works, in 20,000 Gun Shells the content is taken away and the container becomes the content.

Tacita Dean

"They say that when this supervolcano [Yellowstone National Park] explodes, it could destroy several states in America" said the British artist to explain the central themes of this work.

31st São Paulo Biennale

The 31st Bienal de São Paulo is being developed by an international team of curators - Charles Esche, Galit Eilat, Nuria Enguita Mayo, Pablo Lafuente and Oren Sagiv that started working in August 2013 and is concentrating over the next months on the research, selection, production and arrangement of the Bienal at the pavilion in Ibirapuera Park.

There is currently no fixed theme or organising device for the Bienal. Instead of predetermining the nature or meaning of artistic practice, the curators have drawn up some provisional interests and will rely on research, exchanges and conversations in the months to come in order to shape the event. This process, which is intended to be accessible throughout, is grounded on a series of open meetings across Brazil and elsewhere, the workshop on cultural organisation announced here, and intense travels in Brazil and Latin America. More to come soon!
